Azucarera San Isidro. De industria a Campus UGR_Sostenibilidad

Abstract

At the end of 2021, the University of Granada acquired the San Isidro sugar factory, a late 19th and early 20th century sugar mill declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2015 for its architectural, cultural and landscape values. The university's intention is to develop an ecological and sustainable campus (UGR_Sustainability Campus) with mixed programmes that favour the relationship of this historic space with the city, the environment and the Vega (fertile plains). The regeneration project of this heritage is part of a multidisciplinary research project developed by the University of Granada with the participation of public institutions and others dedicated to the study and preservation of industrial heritage and landscape. The text presents the layout of the research and the methodology used for the study of this industrial complex, the result of which has been the elaboration of a strategic plan of action and development (master plan) in accordance with the heritage consideration of this place and its history.
