Abstract

La industria del azúcar supuso un período de progreso sin precedentes en la ciudad y su provincia con la introducción de nuevas tecnologías y sistemas estructurales procedentes de Europa que modernizaron las formas tradicionales de construcción local. Los avances tecnológicos de la estructura ligera en acero laminado empleado en las exposiciones universales y en las estaciones y hangares del siglo XIX propiciaron la construcción de naves de planta libre y la cubrición de espacios de grandes luces que fueron utilizados en los ingenios azucareros. El Ingenio de San Juan (1882) y la Azucarera de San Isidro (1901) contienen un repertorio completo de estas soluciones técnicas y son testimonio de una época de transición de los materiales tradicionales, como la piedra y la madera, reemplazados por el acero y el hormigón, y dan cuenta de una nueva estética que conjugó la técnica con el arte y el espacio hasta el punto de configurar una tipología arquitectónica propia. La Azucarera de San Isidro constituye un espacio vivo de la historia y la evolución de estas soluciones técnicas y tipológicas con una nueva expresividad en torno a la estructura metálica, el hormigón y sus posibilidades.

The sugar industry brought a period of unprecedented progress to the city and its province with the introduction of new technologies and structural systems imported from Europe that modernised the traditional forms of local construction. The technological advances in the light structure of laminated steel used in the universal exhibitions and in the stations and hangars of the 19th century led to the construction of open-plan warehouses and the covering of spaces with large spans that were then used in the sugar mills. The San Juan sugar mill (1882) and the San Isidro sugar factory (1901) contain a complete repertoire of these technical solutions and bear witness to a period of transition from traditional materials such as stone and wood, replaced by steel and concrete, and are evidence of a new aesthetic that combined technique with art and space to the point of configuring an architectural typology of its own. The San Isidro sugar factory constitutes a space that reflects the history and evolution of these technical and typological solutions with a new expressiveness around the metallic structure, concrete and its possibilities.
