Abstract

This paper approaches the study of Franciscan friars and Lullism in Lleida. There were two convents belonging to the Order of Friars Minor (Conventual and Observant) and one convent of Poor Clares in the town, but their history is difficult to reconstruct since many sources have been lost. The first university in the Crown of Aragon was also in Lleida. The friars of the Order of Saint Francis held a distinguished position there, but they also taught theology outside of the university setting. Although the General Study of Lleida was not a prominent Lullian center, Llull’s thought influenced this institution. The Lullism that arrived with Valencian students was doctrinally contaminated by external elements. The Lullism in Lleida was a victim of persecution by the inquisitor Nicolau Eimeric. The case reached the Roman Curia, where Lullists reported the improper practices of the inquisitor and tried to demonstrate the orthodoxy of Ramon Llull’s thought.
