Las bandas juveniles de la Com. Valenciana Valenciana: medio siglo promoviendo la educación musical no formal y desarrollando competencias socioemocionales

Abstract

The phenomenon of music bands in the Valencian Community is one of the most significant models of non-formal musical education that exist both nationally and internationally. At present, the success of this phenomenon depends, mainly, on the work that is carried out in its music schools and its youth musical ensembles. The aim of this paper is to show how the youth music bands have evolved in this autonomous region since its origin around 1960 to the present, both at logistic and educational level. To this end, a descriptive investigation has been done on a thorough analysis of the existing documentation contrasted with an exhaustive fieldwork based mainly on participant and non-participant observation. The currently 374 youth bands have more than 10,000 musicians and offer a group training that in addition to having a positive impact on properly musical and instrumental aspects (holistic hearing education, network learning...) also implies, directly and indirect, the development of socio-emotional skills such as emotional literacy, sensitivity, self-regulation, etc., all of which strengthen the formative content of this type of musical ensembles.
