El adulterio femenino: el ejemplo de Jacques

Abstract

Female adultery: the example of Jacques With the publication of this work, George Sand did not aim at criminalising woman. However, it is true that she gave man a leading and generous role in it. The protagonist becomes a victim of disgraced love. The quite complex intrigue revolves around four leading characters, although there are other more secondary figures: Jacques and Femande, Octave and Sylvia. Octave, Sylvia's first lover, falls in love with Femande, Jacques' wife, and ends up taking her away from the latter, while the husband retires discreetly and loses himself amidst the snow. The central theme of Jacques is a criticism of the institution of marriage. Marriage ends with happiness and possibly with Jacques' life. Female adultery, an expression of a woman's freedom, is the direct cause of this.
