Abstract

This dissertation’s aim is to study fatigue and stress perceived by dangerous material’s truck drivers and in which way does it relate with their working schedule (shift hours or non-shift hours). Truck drivers working with shift schedules were compared with a control group, in the same company and doing the same job, but working within a fixed schedule. A statistical comparison was made between the two samples, and it was concluded that the drivers who work shift hours have a greater perception of fatigue, mainly in the motivational dimension, which translates into less motivation to work. When it comes to stress the demands in the workplace and the social support are the main factors which increase stress in truck drivers who work shift hours. Truck drivers who work fixed schedules have a lesser level of perception of fatigue and stress when compared with those who work shift hours. Even though there are limitations to this study due to the small sample used (44 participants), some implications of the consequences of shift work can be found.
