Neurofibromatose tipo 1 : principais preocupações de doentes e cuidadores de doentes

Abstract

The main objective of this study as exploration of the main concerns and needs of adults with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and caregivers of patients with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Twenty-five subjects, members of the Portuguese Association of Neurofibromatosis (APNF) - fourteen adult subjects with NF1 and sixteen caregivers of patients with NF1 - answered a questionnaire with closed and open questions. Five of these participants answered at the same time as an adult subject with NF1 and as a caregiver of a patient with NF1, a total of 30 questionnaires were analyzed The results were analyzed through a mixed methodology, according to the Interactive Continuum Model. This model requires that we establish a continuum between the methods of analysis used. The answers to the questionnaire about the main concerns with the NF1 - instrument developed for this study - was subjected to a univariate statistical analysis (ordinal scale) and an analysis of content, complementing each other. The results can point out to the existence of a number of concerns with NF1, which might be grouped under three broad dimensions of the process of chronic illness - knowledge of the reality of the illness, control of symptoms of the illness and experience of the illness. Adult subjects and caregivers of patients share the same concerns associated with issues related to illness and issues related to the process of communication with health professionals. While the adult subjects with NF1 do not mention concerns with the remaining areas, caregivers of patients with NF1 express concerns with regard to issues related to learning and school life of students and with issues related to behavior and social relations and friendship. Thus, despite the exploratory nature and limitations of this study, it was possible to gain better knowledge of the needs and concerns of patients and caregivers of patients with NF1.
