Abstract

This work consists on a qualitative study on the effect of investigation tasks on the learning of the subunit titled “Cardiorespiratory System”, which belongs to the unit “Human Body in Balance”, from the theme “Better Living on Earth”, of the Science curriculum of the compulsory education (3rd cycle of Basic Education, in Portugal). Thirty students, on the 9th level of a private school, executed three activities, which were performed in groups of five elements. The first activity was within the learning by problems(= by achieving solutions) and through provided texts. Students had to go through responding to questions which were proposed. The second activity was the preparation of a brochure explaining the studied theme. The third activity was an experienced lesson for observation and manipulation of the cardiorespiratory system of a mammal and the comparison of hearts between different animals. The latest activity was focused and complemented with the fulfillment of a protocol/report document. All the information for the completion, of this report was gathered through naturalistic observation (field notes), from the analysis of written documents, (protocols /reports of practice activity), topic sheets, evaluation forms and the use of questionnaires. The major difficulties experienced by students were related to the comprehension of the problematic situation, making up decisions and managing time.
