Religiosidade e relacionamentos amorosos no jovem adulto : um estudo exploratório

Abstract

The present investigation aims to study the relation between religiosity and romantic relationships in young adults in four dimensions: relational satisfaction, sexual activity, attitudes towards marriage and plans for marriage. Through this analysis we intend to verify the importance of religious issues to romantic relationships at this stage of the life cycle. For this, we used a quantitative approach which aims to analyze a sample of 274 individuals using three different assessment tools. The Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, the Relationship Rating Form - Revised (RRF-R) (Davis, 1996; Portuguese version, Lind, 2007 and Attitude Toward Marriage (MAS - Braaten & Rosén, 1998; Portuguese version in the experimental stage, Pego and Ribeiro, 2009). The obtained results suggest a positive relationship between religiosity and relational satisfaction overall, although not statistically significant. Through the analysis of the items of RRF-R, it was found that religious aspects seem to influence trust between the couple. It was also found a negative relationship between religiosity and sexual intimacy, which associated with the results obtained for religiosity and sexual activity, allow us to infer that there is a trend for more conservative sexual behaviors in more religious individuals. Regarding marriage, the results show that, in general, there seems to exist a positive relation with religiosity, in that most religious individuals evaluate their marriage in a more satisfying way and they are the ones who intend to marry and apparently earlier. This study represents an important theoretical contribution, as it raises several questions on this topic and raises new leads for future research, emphasizing the importance of addressing religious issues in clinical practice, specifically in programs for premarital counseling.
