Abstract

Os microplásticos são partículas poliméricas que, devido à sua produção em massa e à sua reduzida dimensão, se encontram cada vez mais presentes no meio ambiente e, consequentemente, na alimentação humana. O impacto desta contaminação é apresentado em diversos estudos, os quais mostram que, anualmente, o ser humano ingere dezenas de milhares de partículas microplásticas que posteriormente atingem diversos constituintes do nosso organismo, entre outros, o sangue, a superfície ocular, as fezes e até a placenta humana. A presente monografia consiste numa revisão literária de artigos científicos que exploram a identificação e deteção destas partículas nos principais grupos alimentares e o seu impacto no ser humano. A definição, classificação, constituição e metodologia analítica para a monitorização dos microplásticos são abordados de forma integrada, tendo como foco a área alimentar. O principal objetivo do trabalho desenvolvido é o estudo da contaminação dos alimentos por parte dos microplásticos e das consequências para a saúde humana, pelo que grande parte do trabalho está centrada nestes dois temas. Nesta monografia foram incluídos estudos de contaminação na água engarrafada e de sete grupos alimentares distintos. O trabalho também aborda os estudos toxicológicos realizados em mamíferos e células humanas expostos aos microplásticos e os principais efeitos nocivos destes contaminantes no organismo. A monografia termina com uma reflexão acerca do estado atual desta temática e das perspetivas futuras para a mesma.

Microplastics are polymeric particles that, due to their mass production and small size, are increasingly present in the environment and, consequently in human food. The impact of this contamination is presented in various studies, which show that humans ingest tens of thousands of microplastic particles annually, which subsequently reach various constituents of our bodies, including the blood, ocular surface, feces, and even the human placenta. This thesis consists of a literature review of scientific articles that explore identifying and detecting these particles in the main food groups and their impact on humans. The definition, classification, composition, and analytical methodology for monitoring microplastics are integrated, focusing on the food area. The main objective of the work is to study food contamination by microplastics and its consequences for human health, with a significant portion of the work centred on these two themes. This thesis includes studies of contamination in bottled water and seven different food groups. The work also addresses toxicological studies conducted on mammals and human cell lines exposed to microplastics and the harmful effects of these contaminants on the body. The thesis concludes with a reflection on the current state of this topic and prospects for it.
