Importância clínica da vitamina E

Authors: Mendes, Ana Mafalda Silva Santos Pereira;

Importância clínica da vitamina E

Abstract

This monograph aims to study the physiological actions of vitamin E, with emphasis on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions and its role in health. This vitamin is presented in the form of eight isoforms, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols, which are divided into four subclasses or subtypes, namely, α, β, γ and δ. The most abundant in nature and also the most studied is α-tocopherol. This work analysed several observational and clinical studies regarding the clinical uses of vitamin E, especially those associated with cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, atherosclerosis and acute myocardial infarction. The impact on anti-tumour mechanisms and on the reduction of side effects associated with chemotherapy was also evaluated, namely the synergistic effect of tocotrienols during chemotherapy. Other potential effects were also discussed, such as the effect of vitamin E on ocular disorders, specifically cataracts and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, depression, and anxiety. The clinical use of vitamin E is still a controversial topic and is not sufficiently studied, so its clinical benefit is not evident.
