Desenvolvimento Centrado no Utilizador em Hotelaria

Abstract

Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world that has been severely affected by COVID-19, accelerating technological adoption, particularly in hospitality. For this transformation to happen in the best way, digital applications will have to be designed with their users in mind. It is this attention on users that the User-Centered Design (UCD) methodology deals with. The main objectives of this work were to investigate the hotel industry's understanding of UCD methodologies and to survey relevant use cases. It begins with a literature review that demonstrates the lack of relevant use cases related to the UCD methodology in the hotel context. This is followed by a study with a discussion group that demonstrates the lack of focus on UCD among application developers and technological consultants and that hotel units prefer not to put the developer company in contact with guests. Afterwards, a series of interviews were carried out with hoteliers, revealing that the development of websites and applications are not a consequence of requirements coming from their users. Several use cases are recommended: booking breakfast, room service, booking restaurant services, requesting services such as transfers to and from the airport, among others. In a last study, an online survey was carried out with guests which revealed IT solutions considered negative, possibly because UCD methodologies were disregarded, as they are not adapted to their users. Relevant use cases identify non-existent services such as Table Reservations in Restaurants, and others needing to be redesigned such as Check in. As future work, we identify the continuation of the work in this dissertation through the design of one of the identified use cases, its implementation through an iterative evaluation process as well as its evaluation and validation with real users.
