Illness anxiety disorder among portuguese medical students

Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of Illness Anxiety Disorder in medical students remains a controversial topic. Previous studies have found widely disparate prevalence among each other. Aim: The main aim is to determine the prevalence of Illness Anxiety Disorder in medical and non-medical students. As secondary objectives, we aim to determine which coping mechanisms and comorbidities exist in these students. Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study, with quantitative and qualitative measures and we included 345 medical students and 310 non-medical students. The participants completed a form that collected demographic data, history of illness and exposure to illnesses, substance use, onset of new symptoms, and coping mechanisms. They also filled out the English version of Short Health Anxiety Inventory. The results from the two subgroups were compared. Results: The prevalence of Illness Anxiety Disorder in medical students is 21.5% and is 22.9% in students from other courses. The most used coping mechanism was medical consultations, followed by not seeking any medical information or advice and finally, self-diagnosis through online sources, in students with the disorder, or non-online, in the absence of the disorder. The presence of comorbidities was positively associated with illness anxiety disorder, as was the use of sedatives, hypnotics and anxiolytics. Conclusion: The prevalence of Illness Anxiety Disorder in medical students was higher than previously conducted studies. Future studies should take into consideration which course non-medical students are enrolled and determine the effectiveness of the coping mechanisms that were used.
