A great number of the children that are followed in Paediatric Palliative Care have need of someone who takes care of them at home. This is the role of the informal caregiver and his performance and cooperation with the palliative health services presents enormous benefits for the quality of life and health of the patient. However, the position of the informal caregiver was for a long time precarious, whether in economic or social terms; only now is this paradigm being altered. In this dissertation I shall base myself in a clinical case regarding three children from the same family, all of whom have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, with the intent of demonstrating the importance of the informal caregiver, his social and economic conditions in Portugal, as well as the need for a regulation that ensures e protects his rights and quality of life.

Muitas das crianças seguidas nos cuidados paliativos pediátricos têm necessidade de alguém que cuide delas no domicílio. Este é o papel do cuidador informal, e a sua atuação e cooperação com os serviços de saúde paliativos apresenta enorme benefício para a qualidade de vida e saúde do doente. No entanto, a posição do cuidador informal foi durante muito tempo extremamente precária, quer em termos económicos, quer sociais, estando apenas agora a verificar-se uma alteração deste paradigma. Nesta dissertação irei basear-me num caso clínico de três crianças da mesma família com Distrofia Muscular de Duchenne, com o intuito de demonstrar a importância do cuidador informal, as suas condições sociais e económicas em Portugal, assim como a necessidade de um estatuto que assegure e proteja os seus direitos e qualidade de vida.
