Abstract

This work aims to examine the influence of the use of a STEM approach in center of mass and linear momentum of systems learning and to know the students' intention to pursue scientific careers. More specifically, it is intended to find answers to three questions related to learning strategies and the difficulties felt by students when involved in a STEM approach on "center of mass and linear momentum of particle systems" and with the students' intention to pursue scientific careers after being involved in the STEM approach. The investigative work is carried out in a 12th year Physics class, at a school in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. The class consists of 18 students, 10 males and 8 females. The average age is around 17 years old. A mixed methodology was used, and the following data collection instruments were used: participant observation, written documents and a questionnaire. The questionnaire used was developed within the framework of the GoSTEM project (project funded by FCT, PTDC/CEDEDG/31480/2017). During the intervention, five split STEM tasks were used. The tasks context aims to connect students' tastes and real life to the content to be taught. According to the data obtained by observation and written documents, the students presented some difficulties present in the literature, mostly using the help of colleagues in groups to overcome them. Through the questionnaire, it was concluded that most students intend to enter Higher Education in an Engineering course, showing a high interest in engineering and technology issues.
