Abstract

Preserving, studying and disseminating school objects is an essential task, as there is a limited number of publications on this topic and vast collections of these materials that are in danger of disappearing. It was due to this urgency that my subject of Supervised Teaching Practice Report emerged, since I had the privilege of being an intern at a school where heritage is unique and central, since I could never miss the opportunity to get involved with this subject and being able to learn a lot about its management and use, teachings that I believe will be very useful for the profession that I am now starting. I taught the curricular unit "Magmatism and Magmatic Rocks" of the 11th year of schooling in the discipline of Biology and Geology, my focus was to use school objects that were related with the theme, such as rocks and minerals from the school collection, geological reports from the 20th century, scientific artifacts such as the Jolly balance and the most part of my intervention is based on the selection and collection of didactic activities present in 20th century school textbooks, which were later adapted to create practical activities. This project was implemented in a public school in the heart of Lisbon's urban center in an 11th grade class composed of 22 students (13 boys and 9 girls). In this investigation a qualitative approach was used, following an interpretive paradigm. Data collection was carried out through observation of classes, student questionnaires and document analysis. The students' general appreciation of this study was frankly positive, despite the inherent difficulties in each of the proposed activities. By overcoming these difficulties, students developed skills such as the correct handling of laboratory material, observation skills and autonomy. Finally, the use of school heritage in practical activities effectively enhances the understanding of concepts related to “Magmatism and Magmatic Rocks”.
