Abstract

Previous research shows that emotional system is strongly related to the degree of regulation of needs and the structure of personality. Additionally, it was found that the structure of the personality explains part of the variance in the satisfaction of autonomy, competence and relationship needs. Thus, this research sought to clarify, identify and differentiate to what extent the five domains of personality and alexithymia are related to each other and what are their differential contributions to the regulation of the satisfaction of psychological needs, wellbeing, psychological distress and symptomatology, in the light of the Paradigm Complementarity Model. For this purpose, five instruments were applied to a non-clinical sample composed by 103 subjects. The results show a strong association between the domains of neuroticism, extraversion and conscientiousness, alexithymia and satisfaction of psychological needs. It was also found that the five personality domains add explanatory value in predicting the variance of the regulation of the satisfaction of psychological needs. Therefore, these results contribute to a greater clarification of human functioning and, consequently, to the conceptualization of cases and clinical decision-making.
