Abstract

This study presents a perspective about the relationship of the sponsorship from Domitian to Statius. The chapter 1 presents all the contextualization necessary to undertand the problematics. In this one we clarify who was Statius: wich poems he wrote and wich period he lived. We realize who was Domitian, the empereor to which one countless images of tyranny and authocracy are linked. This way in this chapter we find the concepts in which can unfold the sponsorship. We understand that the sponsorship is valued according particular parameters as assimetry, durability and reciprocity. The questions to which we present some answers are dispose in the end of chapter 1 and are continued in the chapter 2. One of them is without doubts very relevant: may Domitian have influenced Statius to write Silva 1.1 which one we translate in the start of the chapter 2? To delineate and trace respons horizons it’s difficult. It requires an analysis detailed of multiple references: the proem from book 1, the first verses of Silva 1.1, the so contradictory verse 16, the Curtiu’s speech. Our conclusion, after so long and sustained annalysis can be only one. It will be wrong if we think in statius like a Domitian’s puppet, or like that one who answers to the constrains and orders from empereor. Statius was a poet and write poetry was his way of life. This service, to write poetry, was a service like any other. Existed officia, that were payed with beneficia. This was only a exchange of goods and services. Statius, without doubts, offered the most valued good to his patrons, the eternety.
