Abstract

Introduction: The removal of soft and hard deposits from dental surfaces using manual and mechanical instruments is carried out periodically in consultations to control and prevent oral diseases. The Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) protocol aims to achieve this objective in a less invasive and more comfortable way for the patient. Objective: To compare the effects of applying the Guided Biofilm Therapy protocol and the traditional deposit removal protocol on gingival health parameters and patient comfort. Materials and methods: A double-blind randomized clinical trial with a split-mouth design was carried out in healthy patients. Each patient underwent instrumentation using the two methods under evaluation in two opposite alternate quadrants (1st and 3rd quadrants and 2nd and 4th quadrants). A questionnaire was carried out using a Likert scale to measure the comfort felt by the patient during instrumentation. They were evaluated after 1 week and after 3 weeks for plaque and bleeding indices. Results: Throughout the evaluations, there was an improvement in the rates of bacterial plaque and gingival inflammation. No statistically significant differences were found between the two protocols under evaluation. The difference in the assessment of comfort felt during the application of the protocols was statistically significant, with an advantage for the Guided Biofim Therapy protocol. Conclusion: The Guided Biofilm Theraphy protocol is a valid therapy for the control and prevention of oral diseases, being better accepted by patients due to the comfort felt during the treatments.
