A abordagem de pessoas intersexo é complexa do ponto de vista médico e sociocultural, tendo-se verificado uma mudança de paradigma ao longo da última década, embora não exista ainda consenso universal. Enquanto no passado era amplamente aceite a “correção” cirúrgica dos genitais não binários, atualmente esta abordagem é contestada por organizações internacionais de direitos humanos, as quais recomendam alternativamente um acompanhamento precoce por parte de uma equipa multidisciplinar, optando, sempre que possível, pelo adiamento de qualquer cirurgia e/ou tratamento hormonal até que o indivíduo intersexo manifeste o seu interesse, a fim de preservar a sua autonomia. Apesar das recomendações internacionais, a abordagem da pessoa intersexo depende em última análise da legislação de cada governo, sendo ainda poucos os países que garantam o seu direito à integridade física, autonomia e autodeterminação, ficando a decisão cirúrgica dependente do consentimento informado dos representantes legais, os quais se encontram numa posição particularmente vulnerável em que predomina um estado de confusão e ansiedade. O presente trabalho final de mestrado consiste numa revisão narrativa da literatura, tendo como objetivo a revisão dos avanços na abordagem de pessoas intersexo à luz dos princípios da bioética, demonstrando a afronta aos direitos humanos que as intervenções não consentidas em idade pediátrica representam.

The management of intersex people is complex from a medical and sociocultural standpoint and there has been a paradigm shift over the last decade, although there’s still no universal consensus. While in the past the surgical "correction" of non-binary genitals was widely accepted, currently this approach is contested by international human rights organizations, which alternatively recommend early monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, opting, whenever possible, for postponement of any surgery and/or hormonal treatment until the intersex individual expresses interest, in order to preserve the person’s autonomy. Despite international recommendations, the approach of the intersex person ultimately depends on the legislation of each government, with few countries guaranteeing their right to physical integrity, autonomy and selfdetermination, leaving the surgical decision contingent on the informed consent of their legal representatives, who find themselves in a particularly vulnerable position in which a state of confusion and anxiety prevails. This master's final work consists of a narrative review of the literature, which aims on reviewing the advances in the management of intersex people in the light of the bioethical principles, demonstrating the offence to the human rights that nonconsented interventions in pediatric age represent.
