Suplementos alimentares no desporto

Abstract

Over the past few years, the dietary supplement market has experienced an exponential increase, especially among athletes and exercisers. This growth reflects the importance society attaches to body image and the urgency to achieve the desired physical shape. However, consumers tend to see the benefit of reaching their goals quickly, but never the potential adverse effects. At the same time, the increase in demand leads to a growth in supply. New industries are constantly appearing with attractive marketing, information that is often biased, incomplete, and promising immediate results. This fact, combined with the undemanding regulation concerning dietary supplements in force in Portugal, may lead to improper consumption and may compromise the health of athletes. Therefore, it is essential that information is available, easily accessible and reliable for those who intend to consume supplements. With this dissertation, I intend to gather knowledge on the sports supplementation available in the market - mechanism of action, efficacy and safety - and analyze the current market of sports supplements consumption in Portugal.
