Abstract

Palliative care is a medical field that arose from the necessity of improving the quality of life of patients with severe and/or incurable diseases, having as its main goal the patient’s wellbeing. Being usually associated with cancer, the recognition of its importance in other diseases, such as liver failure, is recent. Chronic liver disease is a major cause of death worldwide, end-stage liver disease being the final step of its course. Besides having complications that put the patient’s life at risk, end-stage liver disease gives rise to multiple symptoms that decrease quality of life and cause deep psychological suffering. Therefore, in my master’s thesis I intend to praise the great opportunity that palliative care has of positively impacting the lives of people suffering with end-stage liver disease.
