O ensino da odontogeriatria na Europa

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse and characterize Gerodontology teaching amongst European dental schools. Materials and Methods: There were selected 223 institutions from 38 European countries. Initially, the accessible curriculums of each institution were analysed through an online investigation of their corresponding websites in order to ascertain the existence of Gerodontology as an independent or integrated subject. Then, an online questionnaire was given out to the responsible professors of Gerodontology in order to assess their teaching methodologies. Additionally, repeated emails were used to encourage non-responders to complete the questionnaire and to obtain more information. Results: A total of 198 curriculum plans were accessible to this study, of which 40.91% had Gerodontology as an independent subject and 59.09% had it integrated in other disciplines. From the 64 professors that the questionnaire was send to, was a total of 30 responses (47%). The majority reported that the implementation of Gerodontology is frequently in the 5th year of the curriculum with the total amount of contact hours being less than 50 hours. The most covered topics of Gerodontology teaching are the biological, physiological and systemic alterations associated with the process of ageing and the diagnosis of oral conditions related to the elderly patients. Clinical teaching was present in 86.7% of the institutions, being most of them integrated in other subjects. Conclusions: The majority of European institutions has Gerodontology implemented in their curricular plans, although its independent teaching is still less common. Due to demographic ageing, there is a need to improve interdisciplinary and interprofessional communication in order to standardize the guidelines associated with the discipline's methodologies.
