Abstract

Neste trabalho foram estudadas 43 amostras de 35 estações, recolhidas em Junho e Setembro de 2014, com o objectivo de caracterizar as associações de ostracodos ao longo da costa Este do Algarve, ao largo de Armona, Tavira e Monte Gordo. As amostras foram lavadas, quarteadas e triadas em laboratório, obtendo-se um total de 11 063 ostracodos identificados, distribuídos por pelo menos 116 espécies. A plataforma continental do Algarve possui um bordo bem definido entre 110 e 150 m de profundidade, estando dividida em três partes: a plataforma interna (até -40 m), a plataforma média (de -40 m a -90 m) e a plataforma externa (-90 m até transição para o talude continental). Das amostras estudadas, 20 pertencem à plataforma interna e 12 pertencem à plataforma média, com 11 perto do limite entre os dois domínios. A plataforma continental do Algarve oriental é maioritariamente dominada por Urocythereis britannica, Costa runcinata e, ocasionalmente, Cytheropteron ruggierii. As estações ao largo de Armona são caracterizadas pela abundância de U. britannica, que tende a diminuir com o aumento da profundidade; a plataforma interna é caracterizada pela abundância de P. elongata, e a plataforma média por Basslerites teres, C. ruggierii, P. guttata e C. runcinata, com estas espécies presentes na zona de transição. A diversidade e a densidade das associações de ostracodos são normalmente mais altas em Setembro do que em Junho, apontando para os efeitos do upwelling descritos por Sañé et al. (2019). As estações ao largo de Tavira apresentam poucos ostracodos na plataforma interna, com U. britannica e Microcythere spp. abundantes. A zona de transição apresenta maiores populações de ostracodos e é caracterizada por C. neapolitana, C. cf. variabilis, P. guttata, P. jonesii, S. multifora, C. sulcatum e C. runcinata. A plataforma média é caracterizada por C. ruggierii, C. runcinata, K. aff. praetexta, P. guttata e P. jonesii. As estações ao largo de Monte Gordo apresentam C. ruggierii, C. runcinata e P. guttata por toda a plataforma. A plataforma interna é caracterizada por C. neapolitana; a zona de transição por B. teres, P. reniformis e P. jonesii. A plataforma média é dominada por C. ruggierii e caracterizada pelas mesmas espécies da zona de transição e por K. aff. praetexta. A dimensão da população, o índice de diversidade e a concentração de TOC tendem a ser mais baixos na plataforma interna e mais altos na plataforma média. A região apresenta um regime de baixa energia e baixa taxa de sedimentação, que se refletem por baixas proporções de adultos e de carapaças. A proporção de ostracodos vivos é normalmente baixa, com excepção do grupo Microcythere da plataforma interna de Tavira. Muitas das espécies que ocorrem na plataforma continental estão associadas a proporções específicas de sedimento fino, demonstrando controlo por parte do substrato. Existem também espécies fitais na plataforma, nomeadamente L. rhomboidea, que ocorrem independentemente das características granulométricas do substrato. A influência do Mediterrâneo é mais forte na série de Monte Gordo, diminuindo gradualmente em direcção a oeste.

A total of 43 samples from 35 stations, collected in June and September 2014, were studied, to characterize the ostracod assemblages of Armona, Tavira and Monte Gordo, along the eastern Algarve continental shelf. The samples were washed, split and picked; a total of 11 063 ostracods were identified, belonging to at least to 116 species. The Algarve continental shelf exhibits a well-defined limit between 110 and 150 m depth and is divided into three parts: the inner shelf (up to -40 m), the middle shelf (-40 to -90 m) and the outer shelf (-90 m until the transition to continental slope). Of the studied samples, 20 are from the inner shelf and 12 are from the middle shelf, with 11 close to the limit between the two. The eastern Algarve continental shelf is mostly dominated by Urocythereis britannica, Costa runcinata and, occasionally, Cytheropteron ruggierii. The Armona stations are characterized by the abundance of U. britannica along the shelf, which tends to decrease in proportion as depth increase; the inner shelf is characterized by the abundance of P. elongata, and the middle shelf is characterized by Basslerites teres, C. ruggierii, P. guttata and C. runcinata, the same species present in the transitional zone. Diversity and ostracod abundance are higher in September rather than June, pointing to the upwelling effects described by Sañé et al. (2019). The Tavira stations exhibit small amounts of ostracods in the inner shelf, with abundant U. britannica and Microcythere spp.. The transitional zone presents higher ostracod populations and is characterized by C. neapolitana, C. cf. variabilis, P. guttata, S. multifora, C. sulcatum and C. runcinata. The middle shelf is characterized by C. ruggierii, C. runcinata, K. aff. praetexta and P. jonesii. The Monte Gordo stations present C. ruggierii, C. runcinata and P. guttata throughout the shelf. The inner shelf is represented by C. neapolitana. The transitional zone is characterized by B. teres, P. reniformis and P. jonesii. The middle shelf is dominated by C. ruggierii and characterized by the same transitional zone species along with K. aff. praetexta. The population abundance, diversity index and TOC concentration tend to be lower in the inner shelf and higher in the middle shelf. The region corresponds to a low energy and low sedimentation rate environment, given the low proportions of adults and carapaces. The proportion of live ostracods is usually low, with the exception of the Microcythere group from the inner shelf off Tavira. Many of the species found in the continental shelf are associated to specific percentages of fine sediment, demonstrating that ostracods are influenced by the substrate. There are also phytal species in the continental shelf, namely L. rhomboidea, which occur independently to the substrate’s characteristics. The Mediterranean influence is stronger in Monte Gordo stations, decreasing gradually towards the West.
