O nariz do recém-nascido

Abstract

The nose is the entry to the upper respiratory tract, which allows the communication between the external and internal environments. Its structure, physiology and histology, are well known in adults. However, this does not apply to the nose of a newborn child whose nose can’t be considered as being a miniature of an adult’s nose. The neonatal nasal cavities have inferior dimensions, a simpler morphology, are constantly renovating and are responsible for the upper part of the face development. In this age bracket, the nose has a major role, given that during their first years of life, babies are imperative nasal breathers.
