Consequências na saúde oral do mergulho

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the oral manifestations in divers, relating them to possible risk factors. Additionally, the manifestations and the risk factors detected were compared, among professional divers, diving professionals and amateur divers. Materials and methods: The target population consisted of divers between 18 and 65 years of age who dived at the Cipreia Diving Center in Sesimbra, and a total sample of 33 divers was collected. The study was carried out through a questionnaire with 24 questions, delivered and collected personally to the divers. The data were subsequently analyzed using the statistical analysis program SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 26). Results: Dry mouth was experienced by 63.6% of divers. Barodontalgia was reported by 21.2% of divers, while dental barotrauma was reported by only 6% of divers. More than half of the divers, 72.7%, reported never feeling any kind of change. ATM complaints involved 15.2% of divers. In this study, dry mouth was found to be associated with the type of waters in which you practice diving (p = 0.012) and the type of diving practiced (p = 0.015). Dental pain or fracture has been shown to be associated with the state of the affected tooth - healthy / decayed / restored (p = 0.021). Conclusions: The oral manifestation most described by the divers was dry mouth. There was an association between dry mouth and not only the type of dive, but also the type of waters in which diving was practiced, such as between pain or fracture and the condition of the affected tooth. There was no relationship between oral manifestations and possible risk factors related to diving between professional divers and amateur divers.
