The moment of birth it’s an event marked, in our culture, by the social and historical context in the field of health and health care. The scope of the present study is to evaluate the level of knowledge that Portuguese women in the fertile period have on relieve measures of pain in labor and in the moment of birth, as well as the knowledge of alternative positions to give birth. This study counted with the participation of 150 women in the fertile period, 39 of whom had already experienced motherhood. Results show that, in Portugal, women do not have complete information and knowledge of the real advantages and disadvantages of each measure of relieve, as well as a deepened knowledge of alternative positions for birth. The large majority of the population taken into account in this study show confidence in pharmacological measures to relief pain, while also showing some doubts regarding the non-pharmacological measures. Women show more interest in horizontal positions in detriment of vertical positions. In the final considerations it became palpable the lack of information of the Portuguese women regarding these issues, as well as the lack of humanization in the assistance of labor and birth in our country.

O momento do parto e nascimento é um evento marcado pelo contexto histórico-social na área da saúde, na nossa cultura. O presente estudo propõe-se a averiguar o nível de conhecimento que as mulheres portuguesas em período fértil têm sobre as medidas de alívio da dor do trabalho de parto ao parto e sobre as posições alternativas para terem os seus filhos. Dele participaram 150 mulheres em período fértil, das quais 39 já vivenciaram a experiência da maternidade. Os resultados mostram que em Portugal as mulheres não têm noção das reais vantagens e desvantagens de cada medida de alívio da dor, bem como das posições de parto possíveis para o nascimento dos seus filhos. A grande maioria da população em estudo mostra confianças nas medidas farmacológicas de alívio da dor e alguma reticência relativamente às não farmacológicas. As mulheres mostram-se mais interessadas em posições horizontais em detrimento das posições verticais. Nas considerações finais, ficou evidente a falta de informação sobre esta temática, por parte da população feminina e a falta de humanização na assistência ao trabalho de parto e ao parto no nosso país.
