Percurso Hospitalar das carbapenemases

Abstract

The emergence and spread of carbapenem-resistant bacteria has become a serious threat worldwide. Infections caused by these organisms are associated with high rates of mortality and there are few treatment options. Bacteria have several mechanisms that confer resistance to antibiotics, including production of carbapenemase KPC- 3, one β-lactamase with ability to hydrolyze the most β –lactams. This study aimed to document the route Hospital patients harboring of bacteria producing KPC-3 in a Lisbon Center Hospital between november 2009 and december 2012. We analyze the description of 69 patients, aged between 7 and 95 years, and 49 % of these patients were in surgical units. The results suggested the occurrence of cross infection between patients and carrying individuals.
