Abstract

The archaeological sites of Malhada do Mercador, Monte da Ribeira 9, Chancudo 3 and Monte Roncanito 21 were identified and excavated in the scope of the Alqueva Dam archaeological salvage plan, between 1998 and 2000. In spite of an absence of radiometric dating, the technological analysis of the lithic assemblages allowed for an attribution of the occupations to the Tardiglaciar or an initial phase of the Holocene. The dominance of local non-siliceous raw materials concurs to the uncharacteristic aspect of the industry, mostly macrolithic. Having into consideration the recent identification of roughly contemporary contexts (in Sabor and Vouga valleys) and also some of the current re-interpretations for the Coa valley chronological sequence, we discuss the materials collected during the Alqueva project.
