Abstract

Este livro apresenta uma seleção dos principais escritos e discursos produzidos por Manuel Fernandes Tomás (1771-1822) durante os anos decisivos da revolução liberal portuguesa, desde o pronunciamento militar de 24 de agosto de 1820 até à aprovação da Constituição em 23 de setembro de 1822. Fernandes Tomás viveu intensamente os acontecimentos que marcaram a génese do constitucionalismo em Portugal. Com a presente antologia, torna-se possível o conhecimento alargado e enriquecido da sua obra escrita e das suas intervenções parlamentares. E a leitura dos textos de Manuel Fernandes Tomás (proclamações, manifestos, folhetos de polémica pública, artigos da imprensa periódica e intervenções nas Cortes Constituintes) permite perceber a riqueza e a relevância do seu pensamento e ação política. O livro inclui um ensaio introdutório de José Luís Cardoso, responsável pela seleção e fixação dos textos editados, no qual se discute o papel decisivo de Manuel Fernandes Tomás na construção do movimento regenerador e do constitucionalismo liberal vintista.
