Abstract

Este texto pretende fazer demonstração de 3 teses: i) que o recurso a métodos quantitativos que combinam técnicas de Deteção Remota, Sistema de Informação Geográfica e Estatísticas Espaciais são fundamentais para um conhecimento mais amplo e aprofundado do processo de encolhimento (shrinkage) das cidades e do seu impacto no território; ii) que é possível realizar um trabalho com elevado rigor científico e técnico, em tempo útil, com uma metodologia de baixo custo orçamental; iii) e que a geografia dos lugares é determinante na análise, compreensão e explicação das dinâmicas espaço-tempo das cidades. Como áreas de estudo foram escolhidas cidades de Portugal Continental com características diferenciadas: Lisboa e Guimarães, enquanto cidades históricas com um rico património arquitetónico e cultural, que sofreram significativa perda de população durante o decénio 2001-2011; Vizela, uma cidade da periferia de Guimarães, de povoamento disperso e com uma génese de base empresarial e que sentiu um forte impacto da crise financeira da primeira década de 2000; e a cidade do Barreiro, uma cidade de génese industrial de inícios do século XX, que entrou em declínio durante a década de 1970 [...]
