Durante muitos anos, a comunidade surda não viu as suas necessidades educativas serem atendidas. Na Antiguidade e durante a Idade Média estes indivíduos eram vistos como seres incapazes, sem qualquer capacidade de aprendizagem, estando por isso impedidos de frequentar a escola e destinados a trabalhos precários. Quando se percebeu que estes indivíduos eram afinal capazes de aprender, várias correntes de ensino surgiram, desde metodologias oralistas que visavam ensinar o surdo a falar a língua oficial do seu país de origem, até filosofias de Comunicação Total, em que os gestos eram permitidos como auxiliares da comunicação. Os resultados académicos nunca foram satisfatórios até ter sido implementado o Bilinguismo, em que a Língua Gestual era vista como a língua natural do surdo e, portanto, a sua primeira língua, e a língua falada do país de origem seria vista como uma segunda língua, sobre a qual o indivíduo surdo devia trabalhar as capacidades de leitura e escrita.
For many years, the deaf community did not see their educational needs meet. In Antiquity times and during the Middle Ages, these individuals were seen as incapable beings, without any learning ability, and were therefore prevented from attending school and destined for precarious work. After realizing that these individuals were finally able to learn, several teaching streams arose, from oral methodologies that aimed to teach the deaf to speak the official language of their origin country, even Total Communication philosophies, in which gestores were allowed as communication aids. The Academic results were never satisfactory until Bilingualism was implemented, in which Sign Language was seen as the natural language of the dead and therefore its first language, meaning the spoken language of the country of origin would thus be seen as a second language, in which the deaf individual should need to work on the skills of Reading and writing.
