Abstract

Ficou-me sempre na memória a história das rochas da montanha Siddaw, descrita por Doreen Massey (2005). Ela traça a trajetória dos movimentos de Siddaw, que se terá formado no hemisfério sul, e que pelos movimentos dos continentes se deslocou até ao noroeste da Inglaterra durante milhões de anos, onde foi moldada pela ação de glaciares. A história destas rochas migrantes é usada por Massey para demonstrar a instabilidade de qualquer espaço, mesmo aqueles que consideramos intemporais, e para argumentar que os lugares não são meros pontos ou áreas em mapas, mas integrações de espaços e tempo. As rochas migrantes de Massey substanciam os argumentos da cartografia crítica de Harley (1989), que se dedicou a desvendar a relação histórica entre a produção de mapas e as estratégicas políticas nacionais e imperiais, contrariando assim a ideia de que o mapa é um meio objetivo de representar o mundo. Tanto o mapa como o mundo que ele pretende representar são dois processos contínuos, duas performances.[...]
