Colesteatoma congénito

Abstract

Congenital cholesteatoma is a benign but aggressive disease and is rare condition whose incidence has been increasing. Despite the existence of several etiological theories the most accepted is the Epitelial Rest theory. The sequence of occupation of the middle ear by Congenital Cholesteatoma begins at the anterior mesotympanum, invading the attic next followed by the mastoid. Congenital Cholesteatoma is a silent condition that only shows signs and symptoms in an advanced stage. This makes the part played by primary health care providers and the paediatricians in early diagnosis and referencing to specialised physicians even more crucial. The importence of early diagnosis hinges on the need for less complex surgeries and more favourable prognosis. Surgery is the gold standard of care for the Congenital Cholesteatoma.
