Frenotomia na anquiloglossia e efeitos na amamentação

Abstract

Ankyloglossia is a common, congenital condition characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenulum, which may restrict tongue mobility. Most infants with ankyloglossia are asymptomatic. Infants with ankyloglossia can experience breastfeeding difficulties, including poor attachment to the breast, suboptimal weight gain and maternal nipple pain. This subset of infants may benefit from frenotomy (the surgical division of the lingual frenulum). Frenotomy, which is commonly performed, may correct the restriction to the tongue movement and allow more effective breastfeeding with less nipple pain. Frenotomy is a low-risk procedure that is likely to be beneficial for infants, although these should be carefully selected. In the assessment of breastfeeding difficulties, ankyloglossia should be considered as a potential cause.
