Abstract

Of all the universe of the congenital malformations in the human specie, the cleft lip and palate (CLP), the Cleft Lip (CL) and Cleft Palate (CP) express quite early in one’s lifespan. However, their impact isn’t limited just to the early stages of life. It is of utmost importance to know that the cleft itself shouldn’t be treated as one isolated patology. There is a complex articulation of structures and phenomena, of which the middle ear takes part in it. Besides the anatomical description of the importants structures involved in the cleft lip and palate and the middle ear pathology, this systematic revision of literature aims to clarify the epidemiology, patology, treatment and follow-up of both cleft lip and palate and the Middle Ear Patology, emphasizing the role of Otorhinolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery in their approach. Another objective of this revision is the verification of the existent of a cause-effect relationship between both, and which way it occures.
