Corpos estranhos faringo-esofágicos

Abstract

The ingestion of foreign bodies is one of the most common cases in otolaryngology. Children is the group that ingest foreign bodies most frequently, followed by elderly people and people with mental disorders. The food bolus impaction is more common in adults with oesophageal pathology. The medical history, physical examination and a proper foreign body categorization are decisive to the patient approach or treatment. These factors define the triage as well as extraction method. However, 80-90% of foreign bodies ingestion is asymptomatic and pass spontaneously through the gastrointestinal tract. In 10-20% of the cases endoscopic intervention is deemed necessary and only 1% require surgical intervention.
