Presbiacusia : perspetiva de saúde pública

Abstract

Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is a condition that affects more than three hundred million old adults around the world and is predicted that with the increase in life expectancy in the next 20 to 30 years it will impact the life of almost one billion people. Multiple risk factors have been associated with presbycusis and the technologic development has, in recent years, provided new and innovating methods of treatment and rehabilitation that mitigate the impact of this condition. Although the important and serious consequences of presbycusis, such as cognitive impairment, dementia, depression, social isolation and frailty, it continues to be largely neglected from a public health perspective. Therefore a call for action on health policy is critical considering the potential benefits of a population-based approach. In this work, we review the literature on epidemiology, risk factors, consequences, screening and treatment of presbycusis, therefore sustaining the reflection about possible approaches to presbycusis from a public health perspective.
