Epidemiologia da rinite alérgica

Abstract

Allergic rhinitis is an extremely common inflammatory nasal disease responsible for considerable morbidity worldwide. It is considered to be one of the most prevalent chronic diseases, which is currently estimated to affect more than 500 million people. There is extensive scientific literature on the epidemiology of this disease with considerable discrepancy between definitions and forms of classification between studies, which makes it difficult to interpret data and draw valid conclusions. This systematic review aims to organize and rearrange available information in various easier to digest sections, such as: prevalence of allergic rhinitis in adults, in children, geographic variation of allergic rhinitis and its prevalence in Portugal. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis has been increasing in the last decades, in adults and children alike. Higher prevalences are found in more urbanized regions and colder climates. Latitude also plays an important role as a factor of epidemiologic variability. In Portugal, the prevalence of self-reported allergic rhinitis is 26.1%, with higher values recorded in women and in Alentejo. There is still much work to be done to truly understand the epidemiology of allergic rhinitis and, subsequently, the disease itself in its entirety.
