Abstract

The present research has as general objective to understand the techniques of reception of personal archives, donated to the entities, by means of the case study carried out to the estate of Professor Joseph-Maria Piel, guarded by the Nucleus of Historical Archives and Manuscripts of the Division of the Library of the Faculty of Lisbon. To achieve this aim, the study is based on some specific objectives, such as: understanding the concepts and definitions of personal archive, organization of information and provenance or respect of funds; to raise the process of organization of the personal archives guarded by Public Archives; raise the history of the genesis of the personal archive Joseph-Maria Piel; identify the process of donation of the estate of Professor Joseph-Maria Piel to the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon; identify the Joseph-Maria Piel spoils guarded by the University of Lisbon, the University of Coimbra and the University of Cologne (Germany); to elaborate the archive inventory of the Joseph-Maria Piel guarded by the Nucleus of Historical Archives and Manuscripts of the Division of the Library of FLUL. As a methodology, this research is based on a qualitative (deductive) approach, at the intersection of the case study with biographical study as applied methods and the literature review, the documentary research and the interview survey as techniques for data collection. Thus, it is understood that this research, through empirical intervention to the estate of Professor Joseph-Maria Piel, hopes to achieve, as a result, the identification of the dialogue that archives management establishes with other disciplines to understand the history of the genesis of documents personal file, in order to verify the authenticity and veracity of the information contained in the documents.
