Abstract

In times characterized by the implementation of a set of pedagogical-curricular projects in schools, school principals are responsible for the management of school’s planned change processes, which is central to its implementation. As such, this dissertation aims to identify the challenges, tasks and actions of school principals of two educational establishments in the framework of the implementation of planned change projects, namely the Curricular Autonomy and Flexibility Project (PAFC) still at a pedagogical experimental stage. The PAFC is a pilot project, established by the Education Ministry, through the Direção-Geral de Educação, in the academic year 2017/2018. The research, of naturalist and interpretative nature, uses the inquiry by interview to both principals and the survey by questionnaire to several key players. Data collecting instruments proved to be fundamental to understand the changes in school management and the opinion of both managers and of the various key players about how the PAFC implementation was reflected in school’s life. The results show that there is a noticeable improvement of students’ development, specifically their social and personal competences, as well as their critical spirit, which highlights the importance of the school’s manager pedagogical leadership skills. In this regard, and despite the isolated constraints, it enables more effective intervention in schools with repercussions on students’ learning, on the ability to motivate/strengthen teams and the collaborative work methods among professors, betting on a distributed leadership that allows to sustain newly introduced processes.
