Abstract

The present exploratory study aimed to describe and compare psychological coping styles and PTSD between two groups of veterans of the Portuguese colonial war. Based on a sample of veterans (N=70), psychologically evaluated at the Military Hospital, these were divided into two groups (G1 with PTSD and G2 without PTSD) in an attempt to test some hypothesis concerning the type of coping strategies adopted The main instrument used was the self-report COPE Inventory (Carver et al., 1989) in its complete version (60 items). The results of the various hypothesis based study show that the veterans of the Portuguese colonial war diagnosed with PTSD adopted less coping strategies focused on the resolution of problems and revealed more psychopathological symptomatology when compared to veterans who did not meet the criteria of PTSD diagnosis. These results, although limited by the number of the subjects of the sample, are consistent with similar studies and literature in what concerns the coping strategies adopted by other war veterans diagnosed with PTSD.
