Abstract

This dissertation addresses the issue of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). In order to see if they are a solution or a problem, given the fact that they allow the continued growth of World population because they help ensuring the right to food. However, there are downsides: the risks to health, environment and safety. It is necessary to consider whether the benefits associated with producing GMOs are greater than the costs. Thus, it is essential to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of GMOs. Technological advances allow population growth and enable the discovery of new production techniques which respect the environment. There are at least two distinct control models and regulation of GMOs: the model adopted by the United States; and the model followed in the EU. This study will focus on the US model. The economy finds in GMOs the means of solving the problem of scarcity of resources.
