AS EQUAÇÕES NOS MANUAIS ESCOLARES

Abstract

This paper identifies aspects that changed in the approach of first degree equations in Portuguese textbooks, one from the end of the 19th century, other from the middle of 20th century, other from the period of modern mathematics (the 70s) and one contemporary (the 90s). The books analysed represent a strong evolution in little more that a century, in the age level of pupils that study this concept, in the approach that become simpler along the way, in the relationship with the reader, in the perspective of mathematics as subject with multiple connections and regarding the proposed tasks. Several questions are proposed for future work regarding this and other curriculum concepts, in Portugal and elsewhere.
