Casas Álvaro Machado, no Alto do Estoril, e a azulejaria de José António Jorge Pinto: resumo biográfico e obra

Abstract

In Alto do Estoril, in 1907, started the building of a number of homes, according to the project of architect Álvaro Augusto Machado and with tiles by the painter José António Jorge Pinto, where he joined the form and function through a complex trick between plans and a first note aesthetic quality, besides having distinctly Art Nouveau stylizations employed. The projects include a house for the psychiatrist José Caetano de Sousa Pereira and Lacerda, the Bairro das Roseiras for the same doctor and two houses for the architect. The journey that led to the original conception denotes a natural maturation and innovation in the work of the two artists, the tiling is perfectly integrated so as to highlight the architectonic forms. The vast majority of the tiles used by the architect in his projects had the participation of José António Jorge Pinto, a painter whose intrinsic and aesthetic quality should be stressed. This painter has a vast and diverse tile work, some of which is emblematic of the Art Nouveau period. The definition of an architect Art Nouveau found in the work developed by Álvaro Machado the relationship between space and volume. The work developed by the two artists deserves to be valued for its unequalled aesthetic properties and most certainly should be made known at a domestic level and abroad, as well.
