Abstract

The main goal of this study is to verify the use of the Portuguese tile within the period denominated as “Estado Novo”, seeking to if in fact, it was a means to instil an ideology that was in sight and that was absolutely paramount for the consolidation of a regime. Notwithstanding, like in all the regimes, will there be signs of resistance? This dissertation will have a sum up of the history of the Portuguese tile since its introduction in the country in the fifteenth century till nowadays, approaching the techniques used and the pictorial development achieved in each period. Next there will be an explanation of the meaning of the “Estado Novo” its characteristics and main policies that aimed precisely in the using of the culture for the dissemination of Salazar´s ideology in the denominated “Politics of the Spirit”. Subsequently and in the process of the Portuguese identity, the concepts of representation, ideology and the imagined community will be analysed. Finally, conclusions will be drawn in order to justify this study. Since till today there is no work available that has dealt with the study of Portuguese tile in this specific period, it has been considered relevant and, as such, a contribution for the enlighten of the academic and the general population and also to some future strategies of study.
