Natalidade e políticas de família

Abstract

A estabilidade no emprego e o crescimento económico podem ser fatores preditores do aumento do número de nascimentos nas sociedades contemporâneas de cultura ocidental. Contudo, a relação entre desenvolvimento económico e fecundidade não é linear nestas sociedades onde os níveis de fecundidade refletem não só os “custos monetários” da parentalidade, mas, também, os “custos de oportunidade” (Luci e Thévenon, 2013). A natalidade é, portanto, um fenómeno complexo, dada a interdependência que mantém com múltiplas dimensões da vida em sociedade: educação, cultura, economia, política, religião, direito. Neste sentido, podemos equacioná-la como um “fenómeno social total” – conceito do antropólogo Marcel Mauss (1974: 41) – na medida em que expressa “ao mesmo tempo, e de uma só vez, toda a espécie de instituições”. Isto é, a sua análise e compreensão apelam à interdisciplinaridade de abordagens, entre elas: a demografia, a sociologia, a economia, a psicologia, a história, a teologia, etc.
