Medo e violência : representações na literatura policial carioca do século XXI

Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the representations of violence and fear in contemporary detective fiction from Rio de Janeiro, taking as starting point the ideas that this genre try to understand the city and that this is a genre in which the elements of violence and fear are strongly present. Taking into account the enlargements that this genre contemporaneously experiences, as well as its intrinsic correlations with other genres, especially with certain criminal literature, were selected five books: Inferno, by Patrícia Melo; Calibre 22, by Rubem Fonseca; Suicidas, by Raphael Montes; Oeste, by Alexandre Fraga; and Um lugar perigoso, by Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza. The first novel, Inferno, chooses as protagonist a young drug dealer in a favela, questioning how social circumstances influence a possible culpability of the individual. Calibre 22 is a collection of short stories that, using mechanisms of the police and criminal genres, explores topics such as homophobia or sexism and presents questions about the possibility of justice and truth. Suicidas is a novel of psychological content which represents the relationship between nine elite youths, representing a certain kind of entangling of this class and that restate the issue of fact and version. Oeste, in its turn, is in the same way as Inferno a novel that discusses group dynamics. However in this case specifically does it about the mafia in Rio de Janeiro. Um lugar perigoso is a novel very clearly identified with the detective fiction and that examines the life of the normal and urban man, in particular the resident of Copacabana. In this kind of literature, there is no homogeneity neither in form nor in content. but there are notably discussions about truth, justice, innocence and guilt. Furthermore, in a central way, violence and fear are the elements that literarily allow the presentation of these questions.
