Envolvimento paterno e saúde mental do pai

Abstract

This study falls within the scope of paternity, specifically addressing father involvement and the psychopathological symptomatology of the father. It aims to characterize these two dimensions according to the child (gender and age) and father’s (age and schooling) sociodemographic variables, and to analyse the relationship between them, and the association between father involvement and marital satisfaction. The sample of the study was composed of 78 male participants, fathers of school-aged children (5-10 years). The following instruments were used for data collection: the Paternal Involvement Scale (EEP; Simões, Leal, & Maroco, 2010a, 2010b) and the Portuguese version of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI; Canavarro, 1999, 2007; Derogatis, 1993), namely the Depression, Anxiety and Hostility subscales. Marital satisfaction was assessed through a question asked in a Data Collection Interview (sociodemographic and family information). The fathers of girls (versus boys) reported higher levels of availability; a similar trend was also observed for younger fathers (≤ 40 years). In addition, fathers with secondary education (versus 3rd cycle and higher education) reported greater presence in the child's life (a similar tendency was found for fathers of younger children, aged 5-7 years), while also reporting higher levels of hostility than 3rd cycle fathers. In view of the relationship between both variables, positive associations of the father involvement Presence and Discipline subscales were found with Hostility and Depression respectively (although in the latter case the result was merely tendential). A positive association between the Care subscale and marital satisfaction was also observed.
