Avaliação da bioatividade da espécie mediterrânica Juniperus sp.

Abstract

Since the ancient times that plants are used for the treatment of diseases, with evidence of more than 5000 years. Therefore, the study of plants is still of great interest in terms of drug discovery. Throughout this work, will be studied four species belonging to the genus Juniperus, these being, Juniperus communis, Juniperus oxycedrus, Juniperus phoenicea and Juniperus thurifera. Will be described the bioactivities presented by these species, discriminating the antimicrobial activity, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activity, herbicide activity, gastro-protective activity, neuroprotective activity, hypoglycemic activity and antitumor activity. The most promising subspecies is the Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. badia and so are described some laboratorial work that demonstrated the antitumor potential in tumor cells of colon cancer, HT-29.
